INDEX

A system is introduced: "Brunette Lady". I think young female actresses of such physical aspect had been appearing frequently in Season 3, some of them were victims, some were related to the crime as female partners of man. In some episodes they have subtle similarities with Sara. What does it really mean? I really don't know. Just for fun I guess.

2. The Accused is Entitled

The familiar cozy PSV was very much alive between Grissom and Sara, up to where Philip Gerald showed up and told Grissom that Sara had a "relationship" with Hank Peddigrew, the paramedic, over a large bloody bedsheet. In the beginning, Sara appeared to be annoyed by Hank at the crime scene, but clearly, like she said herself, they went out together (for movies), although they were not really in relationship. From that point on, Grissom started to show his coldness to Sara.

GRISSOM: Well, we already know the bra was moved. Sara filed a supplemental report to that effect.
PHILLIP GERARD: I know. I wish she'd mentioned her relationship with the EMT who moved the bra.
GRISSOM: Relationship?
PHILLIP GERARD: A Hank Peddigrew.
PHILLIP GERARD: We just interviewed him. He says he thanked her for letting him move the bra back.
(looks at SARA. SARA responds.)
SARA: He was just, uh, being polite and, um, it's not a relationship. We go to movies ...
GRISSOM: (interrupting) Doc? Why don't you and I go to my office. We can talk there.
PHILLIP GERARD: Thank you.

(PHILLIP GERARD turns to leave the room. GRISSOM walks around SARA and the table to follow. On his way out, GRISSOM stops and turns around to look at SARA.)

SARA: (subdued) I'll get the blood swatches to DNA identify any additional donors on the sheet.

(GRISSOM closes his mouth and doesn't say anything. He turns and leaves the room. Camera lingers on SARA.)

Note: One version of the script direction indicated Sara felt like "quicksand".

Before Sara's testimony, she went to visit Grissom in the lab. After commenting Sara that she looked great, he told her that it was nice that she had found a life outside the work, even though his facial expression was sheepy and reserved. Sara did not felt like explaining so she left.

(GRISSOM notices that SARA is dressed for her court appearance.)

GRISSOM: You look nice.

SARA: Thanks.
(SARA pauses and doesn't smile at the compliment. Her thoughts turned to the upcoming proceedings.)
SARA: Wish me luck.(SARA turns to leave.)

GRISSOM: Sara?
(She stops and turns back to look at GRISSOM.)
GRISSOM: Whatever happens in court, it's not because you're seeing this guy. (SARA blinks. She doesn't respond.)

GRISSOM: You deserve to have a life.
(GRISSOM turns back to his work. Without a word, SARA leaves. Camera cuts back to GRISSOM as he watches SARA leave, her footsteps fading down the hallway. He turns back to look at the photograph of the unknown blood pattern.)

Grissom's hearing problem begin to worsen during the trial. In the end, the truth triumphed, but what would the revelations do to the team's interpersonal dynamics?

3. Let the Sellers Beware

The CSI team investigated two bodies in a home put up for sale. Sara was sent alone to investigate a murdered teen cheerleader.

(BRASS joins them against the railing. He holds out a framed photograph of the young dark-haired woman and an older man. They both are smiling at the camera.)

BRASS: Cal and Monica Newman. Owners of the house. My guess, second marriage. CATHERINE: 'Cause she's a babe and he's ...
BRASS: He's, uhm ... got a good sense of humor.
(GRISSOM doesn't seem amused. BRASS returns GRISSOM'S look.)

Brunette Lady No.1 - The victim, who was married to an older husband.

Sara was on her day off, but Grissom called her back for a case of murdered teen cheerleader.

SARA: (to GRISSOM) I am so sorry.

GRISSOM: I paged you two hours ago.

SARA: Right. Uh, it's my day off. I was up in Pahrump at some vineyard. You told me to get a life, remember?

(SARA smiles at GRISSOM.. GRISSOM doesn't return the smile.)

GRISSOM: Did I?

(SARA'S smiles slowly fades. GRISSOM doesn't say anything for a moment. He pulls out his orange-tinted goggles from his kit.)

GRISSOM: I'm sorry, but I needed you. Dispatch called in a 419 at Tuscadero High School. You're on your own.

SARA: On my own?

GRISSOM: (looks back up at SARA. Their eyes meet.) Solo.
(GRISSOM puts on his goggles intending to go back to work and effectively dismissing her. SARA stands there a moment looking at GRISSOM. She is not pleased by what she just heard.)

SARA: See you around.

I don't know what made a man denied whatever he had said before; he had told Sara to have a life more than twice up to the above episode (check the "before the plant" part. It might very much be jealousy. Therefore, Sara got her first solo case. Sara's "our-of-nowhere" brother was only the beginning of the downfall of the CSI writers, but the end scene was filled with unresolved tension. She appeared at Grissom's office door to say goodnight, but she seemed to want to say more than she intended.

SARA: Good night.

GRISSOM: Good night, Sara.

(SARA smiles. She starts to leave then stops when GRISSOM calls back out to here.)

GRISSOM: Hey. Nice work on the high school case.

(SARA walks back to the doorway. He smiles and nods his head. Twice. Sara smiles back. If that was his apology for his earlier attitude, she'd accept it. For a moment she doesn't say anything and continues to stand in the doorway. GRISSOM returns to his paperwork. SARA considers it for a moment, then says what's been on her mind since she was assigned to this case.)

SARA: I'm ... uh ... sorry I missed your page.

(GRISSOM looks up at her, a little surprised to see her still standing there.)

SARA: It's just, um ... you tell me to get a life and then I get one, and then you expect me to be there at a moment's notice. It's ... um ... confusing.

(GRISSOM doesn't know what to say. He takes his eyes off of SARA, removes his glasses and considers his response. He's caught off guard by her honesty and takes a moment to respond. A moment too long. When he finally figures out what he's going to say, he looks up at SARA ... )

( ... and finds that she's gone.)

(The camera holds on GRISSOM sitting behind his desk, holding his glasses and staring at the empty doorway.)

This only foreshadowed the unresolved situation between Grissom and Sara.

4. A Little Murder

Grissom, Sara and Nick investigated the death of a little person, otherwise known as a "dwarf". Intriguing moments of Grissom and Sara working together to solve the case.

Brunette Lady No. 2  - Jessica Marcus, who is young and beautiful, and is the fiancé of dwarf victim Lawrence Ames.

MELANIE GRACE: Does he (Grissom) ever talk?
SARA: Yeah. At, uh, random intervals.

5. Abra Cadaver

Grissom, Sara, and Warrick investigated the bizzare disappearance of a magician, The Amazing Zephyr (played by Tom Noonan). Grissom and Sara were on the same case, but they were no longer as close as they were in Season 2. Yet there are some vibey moments.

6. The Execution of Catherine Willows

This episode is Catherine centric. Catherine regained her weight in Grissom's "inner pose" by sharing her execution experience. Sara's attitude was somewhat "off" while remaining professional, perhaps due to the case is about female victims in violent crimes.

Some G/S PSV moments.

7. Fight Night

Grissom, Sara and Warrick investigated the death of a boxer who died in the game. We noted that Sara and Hank Peddigrew were still in touch. Hank helped Sara with clues left in the ambulance.

Grissom/Sara "Walkover"

Grissom and Sara experimented the "mercury-flavoured" boxing gloves on Warrick. And yes, Grissom and Sara couldn't have been physically closer.

8. Snuff

Sara and Catherine investigated a real murder on Snuff films. Grissom investigated a body covered with fire ants, and called in the now married Terri Miller for help.

No GSR.

9. Blood Lust

Brunette Lady No. 3 - The taxi passenger played by Gina Phillips.

Grissom arrived the scene alone, Brass asked where his pupils were and he said he was on a date. Till today it was still a mystery where he was. A logical explanation is that he was off dating or feeding some bugs.

Again, Sara was on her day off, but Grissom called her back, because, according to him this time, " I need you".

SARA: You know you pulled me away from a forensic anthropology seminar, right? It's required. It's part of the continuing education program...

GRISSOM: Well, I'm sorry, but everyone seems to have something to do today. I have a teenager who was run over by a taxi. He wasn't hit by it; that's not what killed him. He was stabbed, fatally. For now, I have no ID, no suspects and no primary crime scene. I need you.

SARA: How can I help?

Since Grissom seemed to have some kind of fascination with anthropology in the past, it might explain Sara's "continuing education" on Forensic Anthropology. Sara shot Grissom a big smile and Grissom smiled back. He lifted up the yellow tape and let her in the scene. The "lifting" gesture was absolutely symbolic and screamed "META". He. Let. Her. In. Not to mention the almost musical camera angles and the sexual tension between Grissom and Sara --- they were even wearing sun glasses!

So, Grissom and Sara shared some nice, geek mindmelding time in the field. They uncovered a gun while looking for a knife. Later, Sara shed some lights on how to do with the gun:

GRISSOM: Burnt skin is useless for DNA.

SARA: Yeah, but, what about sweat? There's a 17% chance of DNA recovery from the shooter's perspiration.

GRISSOM: 17%?

SARA: Yeah. New paper out of Australia. You haven't seen it? (reciting) 17% chance of DNA recovery from the grip of a gun, 67% chance from a cigarette, 32% chance from the brim of a hat. Would you like a copy

GRISSOM: I don't need one. I have you. (beat) Swab the pistol grip; get it to DNA.

This was all too familiar; Grissom said something extremely flattering, and then fled like a kid just recited Hallmarks card to his crush. Sara was surprised for a moment, shook her head, and then left.

Looking for more evidences, Sara went back to the crime scene at night. After returning to the lab, she carefully examined the map with Grissom. Their distance was unusually close but with less tension; in fact, they were very cozy with each other and spoke in pillow-ish talk tone.

We would not see Sara smile this much after this episode.

10. High and Low

Catherine, Sara, and Grissom were on different cases. Sara was again off Grissom's radar. Unlike the cozy dynamic between the geeks, Sara told Catherine that Grissom was not talking. Her tone made us believe the situation was not great. Catherine had tried to approach Grissom, but Grissom guarded hard about problems, including his loss of hearing.

11. Recipe For Murder

Sara's action was out of character because the screen writers weren't doing their jobs. She unconsciously called Hank Peddigrew "baby". It might explain that she was reaching out for "the other option" other than Grissom after his confusing act in High and Low. It also proved that Sara and Hank were on the track of a more close relationship. Just how bad it was? Read my review here.

12. Get Murder?

This episode was inexcusably bad. I had no idea why CSI's production value dropped so much since High and Low. Maybe it was like that victim in High and Low who just .. dropped on the ground.

There were some Catherine/Sara moments regarding the case.

13.Random Acts of Violence

Warrick centred. Sara appeared briefly.

14. One Hit Wonder

At this point we all should know "The Era of Catherine-Centered Episodes" had come, and all hobbits and kings and elves shall.... CUT! Catherine investigated a case regarding a rock singer while Sara vowed to track down the shooter who shot her best friend (a D.A, played by Elizabeth Mitchell) only to find out the ugly truth behind the shooting.

Feeling betrayed, Sara calmly shared her story with Grissom in the locker room.

SARA: The cop read Melissa her rights right there in the hospital room. You think you know somebody.

GRISSOM: I never think that.

(SARA looks up at him.)
SARA: Ever?
(After a moment, she turns away and stares at the locker in front of her.)
SARA: When I was a kid I was playing hide-and-seek one day and I found this plastic bag under my big brother's bed. I thought it was a bag of dirt so I took it to my mom. Turned out it was his bag of weed. He was grounded for a year.

GRISSOM: The best intentions are fraught with disappointment.

SARA: Emerson?

(He closes the locker door and looks at SARA.)
GRISSOM: Grissom.

It was extremely heart-breaking, but this scene foreshadowed the up-coming dynamics between the geeks. Grissom, pretty much like Fox Mulder, had a trust issue. He used to be very close to Sara, and he even stated that he trusted her in the second episode of the series. Sara, an idealist, has been a very loyal pupil to Grissom. What happened to make Grissom say "I never think [I know somebody]"? Was it Sara's relationship with Hank which did not escape his eyes off screen? Or he had developed a complex that guarded his hearing problem so he would not get kicked off the lab? When he told Sara that "the best intensions are fraught with disappointment", was he talking about his relationship with her? Did he consciously distant himself from her to protect her or to keep himself from being hurt, and resulted in Sara's heartbreak?

I have so many questions.

Unfortunately, "The Best Intension are fraught with disappointment" later became the best description of me and this show.

15. Lady Heather's Box

(I will have to hold myself before I curse. Or you can read my drunken review here)

But she is a brunette. Brunette Lady No. 4 - Lady Heather.

16. Lucky Strike

Give me Buffy, not some bat cave!

17. Crash and Burn

Brunette Lady No. 5 - Hank's other girlfriend.

Sara found out she was not Hank's only girlfriend after a car crashed into a restaurant and killed people. In this episode Sara and Hank were evidently close; judging by her gesture, they were in a relationship. Catherine was the first to sense something wrong when she noticed that Hank was in the restaurant with the insurance company employee, but Sara only found out later when she interviewed the insurance agent and saw the girl's picture with Hank. The breakup was peaceful, and Catherine offered her comfort.

18. Precious Metal

Can't think of anything at this moment, although Sara had a lot of fun with machines.

19. A Night at the Movies

Catherine worked her way back to Grissom's inner circle. Movies, anyone?

20. Last Laugh

Grissom, Catherine, and Warrick investigated the death of a comedian, while Nick and Sara reopened a possible case of domestic violence.

21. Forever

Grissom, Catherine, and Nick investigated a case of diamond theft; Catherine showed a potential flaw in mathematics. Sara and Warrick investigated a case of teenage Romeo and Juliet. Brunette Lady No. 6 - The dead teenage girl, Jill.

22. Play With Fire

7 consecutive episodes with Grissom and Sara in the same frame, and this is no parallel universe.

A sleep-deprived Catherine accidentally blew up the lab, injured Greg and Sara. Luckily, Sara's injuries were only minor, but the event gave her perspective of her life.

The following

Before the explosion, Sara tried to tell Grissom about something, but she gave up the thought.

The Explosion

That's gotta hurt.

The Aftermath (quote and description courtesy of Interpid)

(GRISSOM watches for a moment, then steps away. He looks around at the people and the damage, then spots SARA sitting on the ground, alone.)
(Concerned, GRISSOM heads for her and kneels down in front of her.)
GRISSOM: (quietly) Are you okay?
(It takes her a moment, but SARA turns and looks at GRISSOM. She has a gash on her forehead and another across her cheek. She's also holding her left hand gingerly in her lap.)
SARA: (dazed) Uh-huh.
(GRISSOM looks down at her hand. He picks her hand up and sees the large bloodied gash on her palm.)
GRISSOM: Honey, this doesn't look good.
SARA: (shakes her head) It's fine.
(SARA looks at GRISSOM.)
SARA: Cleanup's going to be something. We should get started.
(GRISSOM looks down at her hand.)

GRISSOM: You need to get stitches.

(SARA shakes her head again.)
SARA: I'm okay.
(She moves to stand up.)
GRISSOM: (shouts) Would you take care of her hand, please?

(GRISSOM grasps both her hands and helps SARA up. The PARAMEDIC walks over and escorts SARA away.)

The Invitation (quotes and descriptions courtesy of Interpid)

(SARA appears in the doorway and leans against the door frame.)
SARA: You ... got a minute?
(GRISSOM looks up and takes the card out of the rolodex.)

GRISSOM: I was just leaving.
SARA: Yeah, the, uh, schedule says you're off tonight.
GRISSOM: I am.
SARA: Me, too.

(GRISSOM tucks his glasses into his pocket.)

GRISSOM: You should be on paid leave.
SARA: I'm fine.

GRISSOM: You were fortunate. And I'm not talking about the explosion.
SARA: You, uh, you talked to Brass?
GRISSOM: And Nick.

(GRISSOM gathers his things.)

SARA: We got the guy.
(He stands up and takes a couple of steps toward the door.)

GRISSOM: Is that all you have to say?
SARA: Would you like to have dinner with me
(GRISSOM stops.)

GRISSOM: No.
SARA: Why not? Let's ... let's have dinner. Let's see what happens.
GRISSOM: Sara ...

(GRISSOM pauses and sighs.)

GRISSOM: I don't know what to do about this
SARA: (nods) I do.

(They look at each other.)

SARA: You know, by the time you figure it out, you really could be too late.
(SARA turns and leaves. GRISSOM stares after her.)

Some might say that Grissom rejected Sara on the spot, but I beg to differ.

(stay toned for the analysis of "Play With Fire"...)
